Dominique Blain

Blain“The work of Dominique Blain is of the kind that takes the social and political specifically into account. It has no intention of confining itself to a purely aesthetic function, but rather seeks to erase the boundaries that may separate it from other visual and linguistic media… Her art, open to the world’s realities, has dealt particularly on the political dimension of the ways both collectivises and individuals are represented. Developed in the context of the postmodern practices of the 1980s, it has actually taken as its basis a rereading of the image and its relative, interpretive character, as well as a rereading of the object.

What must be emphasized, above all, is that Blain’s work deals with universal subjects, be it history, was or imperialism, or ideological manipulation. While the artist has often drawn her iconography from historical sources, through newspapers, magazines and books, she has always worked to understand and analyse her subjects in the light of contemporary values. Using the specific character of her culture, that of both North America and Quebec, and her own history, Blain continually questions the meaning of facts as well as images, and shows us the underlying codes and ideals... [Her works reveal] an artistic questioning. Their analysis of social relations, institutions and ideologies goes hand in hand with an investigation of artistic practice itself, of the means and materials the artist uses in her work process.”

Biography

Dominique Blain was born in Montreal in 1957, where she still lives. She has exhibited in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Australia, in exhibitions that included the Biennale of Sydney in 1992, and group exhibitions at the Frankfurt Kunstverein, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen. The Arnolfini in Bristol organized an exhibition of Blain’s work that traveled to five UK-based institutions in 1997–98. In the same year, the Musée nationale des beaux-arts du Québec organized a major exhibition that traveled to the Ansel Adams Center for photography in San Francisco and the Sala 1 in Rome. In 1998, Blain contributed her work, Chorus, to the international Artranspennine, at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. She has exhibited regularly at the Galerie de l’UQAM in Montreal with Cartographies variables (1993), Présences (1997) and Are You Talking to Me? Conversations(s) in (2003). A major exhibition of her work was organized by the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal in 2004, and traveled to the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina in 2006 and The Nickle Arts Museum, Calgary in 2007.
